Our heritage makes up a majority of who we are. It took me 20 years, however, to truly understand how that impacted me for the best. This project was an exploration and celebration of me and documentation of how I came to rediscover my identity as two kinds of black. The final deliverable is a 9-panel fold booklet that nestles delicately in a transparent slipcase.
I took inspiration from the colors of both of my grandmothers' houses, pictures of family outings and the patterns that define both cultures. To represent this, my final booklet will be separated into three sections:
Maternal, Paternal & Me.
My paternal heritage is deeply rooted in the entirety of the African American experience. My relatives are all over the country, however, our South Florida identity is the most influential. The Black community is self-empowered, proud and optimistic.
My maternal heritage lies in the Caribbean. Specifically from St. Croix United States Virgin Islands, however, we are traced back to Antigua and Panama. Caribbean people carefree, devoted to their families and communities.
This deeper orange color is used to represent the connection between the two cultures through me.
